Head to Altamura to view the majestic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and its two bell towers. Stroll the old alleys and cloisters of the medieval village, then pop into a bakery to savour the bread the city is famous for. Visit Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its trulli. Sample local fare at a trullo, then in the afternoon, stop in Locorotondo—one of Italy’s most beautiful villages—to see the iconic cummersa sloped roofs. In the morning, travel to Otranto, famously called the “Gateway to the Orient” and visit the castle and cathedral from the outside. Continue towards Gallipoli and cross the stone bridge to the historic centre on an island, home to the 13th-century Angevin Aragonese castle and the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, a stunner of Baroque architecture. Take in other churches in the city from the outside, then continue on for fantastic views of the coastline and beaches. Head back to Lecce. (B)
