Answers to your questions
The first step is to contact your advisor. If you are not satisfied with the information they provide, you can write to us. For more details, including contact information, please refer to our Complaint Handling and Dispute Resolution Policy.
You must notify your insurer when your car or recreational vehicle is stored for a season. You must also notify your insurer when you resume use of your vehicle. With CAA-Quebec Insurance, the quickest way is to fill out this online form.
However, in the case of a motorcycle, scooter, snowmobile or quad, you don’t need to fill out the form. The storage and removal of these vehicles is already included in your annual fee.
Also, remember to notify the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec when storing or removing a vehicle.
Everyone has access to the insurance products we offer on our website. You are warmly welcomed to request a quote for any of them that are of interest to you.
Naturally, we provide special benefits for CAA-Quebec members, such as discounts on various insurance premiums as well as preferential rates. Becoming a member to take advantage of these benefits could prove worthwhile for you. Feel free to discuss it with one of our advisors.
Yes, insurance reimburses the cost of child car safety seats, regardless of the severity of the accident. We take no risks! Your car has been struck in a parking lot and the bumper is simply scratched? You’ve been involved in a collision and your car is a total loss? The child safety seat will be reimbursed if you have the proper coverage. Feel free to ask.
It is not recommended to continue using a child safety seat that was in a car at the time of an accident. In fact, most seat manufacturers include a statement to this effect in their user manual.
If you qualify for a new incentive, your insurer will subtract the amount of this incentive from the amount it gives you to buy your new electric vehicle. That way the money from your insurer plus the money from the government will cover the total purchase price.
If you don’t qualify for an incentive, for example if the government is no longer offering one when you buy your new car, or if you’re not eligible because you received one too recently, your insurer will provide you with the full amount needed to purchase your new vehicle.
With CAA-Quebec Auto Insurance, the replacement-cost endorsement is available to owners of a vehicle leased or purchased brand new 5 years earlier or less.
Your Auto Insurance will cover this type of damage as long as your policy includes collision and upset coverage. This event is indeed considered a collision for which you are responsible. You will probably have to pay a deductible. It’s up to you to decide whether the value of the repairs exceeds the amount of the deductible.
You have another possible remedy: depending on the type of damage incurred, you may be able to file a claim with the authority responsible for maintaining the road in question (the municipality or the Ministry of Transport). If your insurer provides a legal assistance helpline, you can seek help from a lawyer to prepare your case. Read more about claims and compensation in the event of pothole damage.
Generally speaking, insurers will quickly declare a flooded car a “total loss” if it has been submerged to the floor or higher. Their owners will therefore be quickly compensated, provided they have chosen to add the following coverage found under Section B of their Auto Insurance contract:
- B3: Comprehensive
- B1: All perils
“Modern vehicles depend largely on electronic components and computers, often interconnected and which are vulnerable to water infiltration,” says CAA-Quebec automotive expert Jesse Caron. “That means a vehicle that is submerged above the floor is a candidate for the scrap heap.” Damage caused by water will not necessarily be evident immediately, but it can be insidious and dangerous. When you remember that the air-gas blend, fuel injection, transmission, and firing of cylinders, among others, all depend on electronics, you realize that risks can’t be taken!
“Even if it still starts, a flooded car can be badly damaged and may behave erratically, even dangerously, sooner or later,” Mr. Caron continues. “It’s better not to drive it. At any rate, few garages will agree to examine a flooded car, never mind repair it.”
It’s also worth noting that a flooded vehicle can no longer be registered, as the Société d’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) explains (Web page in French only).
Yes, with most vehicle policies, this damage is covered by supplementary insurance under Section B (“Comprehensive” or “All Perils”). Therefore, make sure you have both. If you have the CAA-Quebec No-Stress Policy®, exclusive to members, rest easy! Damage caused by hail is automatically covered by your basic policy.
If you need to file a claim, don’t forget that you will have to pay a deductible.
To avoid this situation, remember to park your vehicle in a covered area when hail is forecast. If this isn’t possible, you can park it facing into the wind so that the hail pellets mostly hit the front of the car and windshield, the latter being designed to withstand greater impacts than the side windows.
