The Snowbird File

From the choice of destination to the coverage needed to ensure you get the most out of your trip, we’ve put together a wealth of useful information to help you plan your long stay away from winter.
Which destination to choose for your long stay?
Any reason is a good reason to spend the winter in the warmth. Whether you’re dreaming of napping on the beach, picking up a new language or soaking up the exotic scenery… Here are a few ideas for some great places to stay awhile and escape the cold.
Destinations for long stays
As popular as ever with Quebec retirees, Florida remains one of the easiest destinations to reach, whether by land or by air. The “Sunshine state,” which enjoys particularly mild weather, welcomes a large community of French-speaking travellers every winter. And one thing’s for sure: there’s always something to do under the Florida sun. Depending on your mood, head for the beach, the theme parks, the golf courses or the docks to tease the fish. The U.S. state boasts a well-developed infrastructure for both services and recreation.
With breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and a consistent climate during winter, Puerto Vallarta and Ixtapa are prime destinations for snowbirds. The region offers a wide range of rental accommodations, top-quality golf courses and friendly establishments where guests can sample Mexican specialties and immerse themselves in the local culture. Between the charms of Puerto Vallarta’s historic centre, the liveliness of its seaside Malecón boardwalk and the fine sandy beaches of Ixtapa, there’s no time for boredom during a stay in Mexico! Direct flights offered from Montréal to Puerto Vallarta.
Guadeloupe and Martinique both feature a tropical climate and stunning beaches for relaxation and water activities. Fly to the jewels of the French Antilles to discover lush vegetation, gardens, nature trails, cultural sites and colourful markets. All in French, complete with charming Creole accents! With increasingly better access from Quebec, these sunny destinations provide a range of rental homes for long stays.
Embrace the European atmosphere and the French art de vivre when you drop your bags on the French Riviera. The abundance of apartments and aparthotels available for rent in coastal towns and charming countryside hamlets gives you the freedom to explore the region at your leisure. Between open-air markets, museums and the sea, each day has plenty to offer. Direct flights from Montréal connect to Nice and Marseille.
Saharan dunes, Atlas range peaks, ruins dating back to Roman times and colourful souks: Morocco and Tunisia are overflowing with exotic landscapes and sights. In winter, the temperate climate and affordable cost of living are convincing a growing number of Quebecers to enjoy long stays in these destinations. The seaside resorts offer a wide range of accommodations on a half-board or full-board basis. Both countries also offer French-language services, handicrafts and mouth-watering culinary delights.
There’s no shortage of beauty in Portugal, especially in the seaside resorts of the Algarve, where a pleasant temperate climate prevails. Stroll along the lovely beaches and coves of Albufeira, tee off on the golf courses and visit villages, castles and monasteries steeped in history. And of course, why not enjoy a glass of port? Quebecers choose Portugal for its many apartment-hotels, English-language service and the fact that the cost of living is among the most affordable in Europe. Plus, when it comes to gastronomy, you certainly won’t be left hungry in Portugal!
The Costa del Sol in Spain is a dream destination, renowned for its sunny Mediterranean climate and stunning beaches. Stroll along the golden sands of Marbella, explore the hidden coves of Nerja, and enjoy the world-class golf courses in Mijas. Visit the impressive Alcazaba of Málaga and don’t miss the Picasso Museum for a touch of culture. Savor a refreshing sangria by the sea and enjoy local tapas in the many restaurants. The Costa del Sol is popular with long-stay visitors because it offers numerous apartment hotels, an affordable cost of living, and services available in English. Additionally, the rich and varied flavors of the local cuisine are sure to delight every palate!
