Free morning. After lunch, head to Pico dos Barcelos for a panoramic view of the Funchal amphitheatre. Continue along the winding road through pine and eucalyptus woods to Eira do Serrado (1,026m). See the village of Curral das Freiras and Valley of the Nuns, then visit the botanical garden in Funchal. (B-L-D)
Guided tour of Funchal, including the city centre, São Francisco Garden, Sé Cathedral, municipal square, Mercado dos Lavradores, and more. Head to Câmara de Lobos, a charming town built around a port nestled between two volcanic cliffs. Stop at Cape Girão for breathtaking panoramic views of the coastal plains all the way to Funchal Bay. Continue to Ribeira Brava for a seaside lunch near natural pools sheltered by basalt rocks. Then off to Porto Moniz and a walk through the scenic village of São Vicente. Journey to the east coast of the island and head to Pico do Arieiro to admire breathtaking panoramic views of the central mountains from the summit, 1,818m above sea level. After lunch, explore the village of Faial, whose inhabitants once lived in traditional coquetas and charming wooden cottages.
