Flight to Lisbon.

Day 2Lisbon

Guided sightseeing tour of Lisbon: Park of Nations, Rossio Square, Liberty Avenue, Belém district, etc. Tasting of the famous pastéis de nata. Free afternoon to explore the city of the seven hills.Welcome Dinner (B-D)

Day 4Lisbon – Sintra – Cascais – Albufeira (330km)

Travel to Sintra, home to fairytale palaces and exotic gardens. See Pena Palace and try a local pastry. Take the scenic route along the Costa do Sol (sun coast), past Cascais Bay then explore the fine-sand beaches of Estoril. Continue on to the Algarve, with a stop at the Christ the King statue. Day 6Albufeira – Beja – Évora (206km)

Stroll through Beja’s historic town centre. Go on a guided tour of Évora, the queen city of the Alentejo, including the medieval St. Francis Church and the Chapel of Bones. Vitória Stone Hotel 4* (B)

Day 7Évora – Óbidos – Nazaré – Batalha – Tomar (320 km)

First stop: Óbidos. Stroll through the medieval city and tasting of bread baked on a wood-burning stove with chorizo. Onward to Nazaré, known for its folklore and beach dominated by a massive cliff. See the Batalha Monastery church, a masterpiece of Manueline architecture. Hotel dos Templários 4* (B)

Day 8Tomar – Coimbra – Porto (225 km)

In the morning, visit of the Convent of Christ in the Castle of the Knights Templar. Onward to Coimbra, the country’s first capital. Tour of the medieval district and the hill of its famous university. Embarkation on the ship. Discover Porto lit up at night. (PD-S)

Day 9Porto – Peso da Régua

Take a guided tour of Porto, including the Church of St. Francis, one of the city’s most iconic religious buildings, and Palácio da Bolsa, a marvel of neoclassical architecture. Next up, an azulejos workshop, an ancestral art dating back to the Arab occupation. Sail to Peso da Régua. Enjoy an evening of entertainment aboard the ship. (B-L-D)

Day 10Peso da Régua – Pinhão – Vega de Terrón

Head to the Douro Museum, combining tradition and modernity, to discover the exciting history of the Douro region and winemaking methods. Continue on to Vila Real and explore Mateus Palace and its French gardens. Next, cruise past Porto’s most famous vineyards, passing through the locks of Valeira and Pocinho. Day 11Vega de Terrón – Barca d’Alva – Salamanca – Senhora da Ribeira

Travel to Salamanca, Spain, a magnificent city of culture and higher learning. See the grand square, the cathedral, and the university with its famous library. Return to Barca d’Alva. Gala evening on board. (B-L-D)

Day 12Senhora da Ribeira – Leverinho

In the morning, board the coach and travel the wine route. Wind your way through the speculator hillsides with the Douro as a backdrop. Continue to Pinhão and stop at a quinta for a wine tasting, then continue to the Pinhão train station, one of the historic sites in the Douro Valley, renowned for its superb azulejo frescoes. In the afternoon, sail through the heart of the Douro wine valley. Enjoy an evening of folk music and dancing. (B-L-D)

Day 13Porto – Barcelos – Braga – Guimarães – Porto (160 km)

Landing. Trip to Barcelos, a village of artisans that originated the country’s iconic rooster. Next, tour of Braga and the majestic staircase at Bom Jesus do Monte (Good Jesus of the Mount) Church. Traditional lunch. Visit of the Palace of the Dukes of Braganza and the city of Guimarães. Return to Porto and check into the hotel. Hotel Carris Porto Ribiera 4* (B-L)
