The 10 most frequently asked questions for travel agents

Do you have countless questions before booking your trip? That’s perfectly normal—and you’re not alone. Our experienced travel advisors hear them all the time. Here are the 10 most common questions, along with their answers, to help you better prepare for your vacation.
1. What travel documents do I need for my destination?
Special rules may apply if you’re a citizen of a foreign country.
Good to know: Travel agents can guide you to the right resources, but it’s ultimately your responsibility to ensure you have all the necessary supporting documents before you travel.
2. Is travel insurance really necessary?
Yes! You need travel insurance any time you leave Quebec. The Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) does not fully cover health care fees or emergency medical care outside the province—even within the rest of Canada.
Certain costs, such as ambulance transport or prescription medication, may not be covered. That’s why we strongly recommend emergency medical travel insurance plans with 24/7 emergency assistance.
Tip: Add trip interruption and trip cancellation insurance to protect your investment if you need to cancel before departure or cut your trip short.
3. Is it safe to book a trip online?
Yes, booking a vacation online is safe and simple. You’ll also save on fees compared to an in-person appointment with a travel advisor.
Always book through a licensed travel agency accredited by the Office de la protection du consommateur (such as CAA-Quebec Travel). Your purchase will then be protected by the Compensation Fund for Customers of Travel Agents (CFCTA).
Before paying online:
Ensure the booking site is secure.
Read the booking terms and conditions carefully—some reservations are non-changeable or come with high fees for changes.
Check if you can access assistance from a travel consultant if needed, as you can when booking through CAA-Quebec.
Online booking isn’t only for all-inclusive packages—you can also reserve flights, hotels, or rental cars.
4. Are there fees for using a travel counsellor?
Yes. These fees cover the expertise of a travel counsellor for trip planning, reservations, and finding options tailored to your needs. Services can also include car rentals or assistance with an International Driving Permit.
Good to know: As a CAA-Quebec member, some service fees are waived, and you’ll enjoy extra benefits like special rates, discounts, and CAA Dollar rewards.
5. Can you help me if I have a problem during my trip?
Absolutely. Whether it’s a cancelled flight, a booking issue, or a health emergency, your travel advisor can help you navigate the situation. The 24-hour assistance included with your travel insurance may also come in handy, depending on the situation.
6. Should I book my trip early or wait for last-minute deals?
It depends on your destination and the time of year. Some types of trips should be booked well in advance to guarantee availability. Booking early also improves your chances of securing your preferred dates and accommodations. This is the case for explore guided tours or group cruises, for example.
While purchasing a last-minute trip can be cost-effective, it is not always the case. If there is high demand for a specific date or product, prices may surge. During peak periods, you are likely to encounter fully booked accommodations or flights.
Discuss your needs and expectations with a travel advisor to decide the best option for you.
7. Can I fly with a pet?
Yes, but you’ll need to plan ahead and include your pet in your booking. You can’t just show up with them on the day of your flight.
Contact your airline before purchasing tickets to confirm their pet travel policy. Also, check the destination country’s entry requirements—some may impose quarantine periods.
Good to know: CAA-Quebec Travel Insurance covers emergency veterinary expenses during your trip (conditions apply). With Pet Insurance from Pet Plus Us, also offered through CAA-Quebec, eligible expenses for authorized veterinary care in Canada or the United States are reimbursed.
8. What’s the best time to visit my chosen destination?
It depends on the location and the type of experience you want. Factors such as climate, local events, and seasonal activities matter. For example, wine enthusiasts may plan a trip during harvest season, while others might prefer seeing tulips in the Netherlands or cherry blossoms in Japan.
Peak travel seasons—like summer, spring break, or the holidays—usually mean higher prices, larger crowds, and a less relaxed pace. If possible, travel during off-peak times to save money and reduce your environmental impact on busy destinations.
9. How early should I arrive at the airport before my flight?
For domestic flights within Canada, arrive at least 2 hours early. For international flights, plan for at least 3 hours, especially during peak times like summer and the holidays.
Arrival times also depend on airport size, security checks, and check-in lines. Save time by checking in online and travelling with carry-on luggage only.
Always allow extra time to get to the airport—traffic or roadwork can delay you, and avoiding last-minute stress is worth it.
10. How can I access airport lounges?
Access is usually included with business class or first-class tickets. Many premium credit cards and loyalty programs also offer free entry.
More and more airports now allow any air traveller and their family members to purchase lounge access—either in advance at a lower rate or on the spot. For the price of a meal, you’ll enjoy comfort, food, drinks, and a peaceful break from the busy terminal.
