Discover the coverage and benefits of Emergency Medical Insurance

Basic coverage

You get up to $5,000,000 in coverage for emergency medical care. This means you may be eligible for reimbursement of expenses for medical consultations, medical treatment, hospitalization, prescription drugs, emergency medical evacuation, and so forth.

If you need to see a dentist during your trip, you are entitled to reimbursement of expenses up to $2000.

Should you fall ill with COVID-19 while travelling, you can claim reimbursement for the cost of treatment.

You may be able to access a physician without having to travel. Indeed, depending on your condition, the travel assistance agent may offer you videoconferencing or a visit from a physician at your place of stay.

This is a financial benefit providing up to $3500 to cover essential living expenses during your medical treatment abroad (e.g., accommodations near the hospital or meals for you and your travel companions).

This coverage includes the cost of childcare while a parent is hospitalized, repatriation to Canada with an accompanying adult, etc.

This protection covers the return of the vehicle and baggage should the insured person be hospitalized.

This protection covers the cost of emergency veterinary care, as well as boarding and repatriation of the animal if necessary, up to a maximum of $500.

This protection covers the cost of a “semi-private” room in a hospital, rehabilitation centre or convalescent home upon return to Canada, up to a maximum of $1000. It also covers the cost of home care by certified nursing staff, as well as the rental of medical equipment up to $150.

In the event of the death of an insured person, the repatriation of the remains to the country of origin is covered up to $10,000.

Additional coverage and options

This optional coverage is for a condition that existed prior to departure and is not covered by your basic travel insurance. Emergency medical and hospital costs are covered for this condition up to $200,000. To benefit from this coverage, your health status must be stable in the 7 days prior to departure.

For most travel insurance policies, pre-existing condition clauses only cover problems and conditions requiring medication or treatment that are stable for three to six months prior to departure. Which is why this additional coverage can be worthwhile.

Get up to $5,000,000 in coverage in the event of injury or illness incurred during a hot air balloon or helicopter tour, or while parasailing.

Expenses up to $5,000,000 are covered in the event of injury or illness resulting from a professional sport or participation in a motor speed contest while travelling. Training, exercise, and competitions are covered.

The Annual Plan covers all your trips for 12 months. It provides coverage in the event of an accident or health problem while travelling. There are several choices of maximum duration for your stays abroad: 4, 8, 15, and 30 days.

Coverage is valid for one year, worldwide, even in Quebec.* No matter how many trips you undertake!

Answers to your questions

The first step is to contact your advisor. If you are not satisfied with the information they provide, you can write to us. For more details, including contact information, please refer to our Complaint Handling and Dispute Resolution Policy.

Everyone has access to the insurance products we offer on our website. You are warmly welcomed to request a quote for any of them that are of interest to you.

Naturally, we provide special benefits for CAA-Quebec members, such as discounts on various insurance premiums as well as preferential rates. Becoming a member to take advantage of these benefits could prove worthwhile for you. Feel free to discuss it with one of our advisors.

Usually, the insurer will cover the required costs directly. However, some hospitals may require immediate payment.

We recommend that you contact your Travel Medical Assistance as soon as possible. They can recommend a doctor, clinic or hospital, confirm your coverage and save you a cash deposit.

Yes, but be aware that insurance companies and carriers may not have the same requirements.

While Canadian authorities allow pregnant passengers to fly up until the 36th week of pregnancy, most travel insurance policies have different conditions.

Travel Insurance offered by CAA-Quebec covers pregnancy and related complications if the pregnancy has not been declared high-risk and if the pregnant woman is travelling before the final nine weeks preceding her due date.

However, children born while travelling are not covered, regardless of when they were born.

Please note that the airline may require written confirmation of the number of weeks of pregnancy. Therefore, it is important for pregnant passengers to consult their physician and obtain all the necessary information before travelling.

Yes! The Annual Plan package option from CAA-Quebec Travel Insurance is perfect for people who plan to make several trips a year. This Annual Travel Insurance is offered as an option with the Emergency Medical Insurance and the Vacation Package Plan.

You choose the maximum duration of your coverage based on the total length of your stays. Several trip-length options are available to you.

Choosing this option saves you time, since you’ll be covered for all your trips during the year under a single policy. Plus, you won’t need to notify your insurer before each trip unless an extension is required or your state of health changes.

It also saves you money: the insurance generally pays for itself after just two trips.

There are various reasons why you might need to extend your trip: you might be having too much fun to come home just yet, or an unforeseen event beyond your control might prevent you from coming back when you planned. In the first case, all you need to do is notify us before the return date specified in your contract. If no claims have been filed, we will extend your contract and charge the extra amount to your credit card, so you can enjoy your vacation for longer!

In the case of an unforeseen event, such as a delay of up to 24 hours due to the carrier, or hospitalization that goes beyond the planned return date, your coverage can automatically be extended free of charge. Refer to your policy for more details.

A pre-existing medical condition is a health condition that already exists at the time insurance is purchased or at the time of departure. It’s also known as a “pre-existing condition.”

It may include, for example, a case of influenza for which you have consulted a doctor, a change in the dosage of one of your medications, high blood pressure, surgery, a problem for which you are awaiting medical results, and so on.

You must inform your insurer of your health status, e.g., on the medical questionnaire if one is required. A false statement or erroneous information may result in your policy being cancelled and rendered null and void.

Travel Insurance distributed by CAA-Quebec allows you to add an option to your policy to cover a pre-existing medical condition. No additional questions about your health will be asked. Your health status simply has to be stable for 7 days prior to departure for coverage to apply.

Just because you’re taking medication doesn’t necessarily mean your insurance coverage will be limited. As a general rule, if the medical conditions for which you’re taking medication have been stable during the 3 or 6 months prior to your departure, you shouldn’t have any problems. You should be able to buy Travel Insurance and even get coverage for these conditions. The stability period required in order for a condition to be covered varies according to the product underwritten.

What’s essential is that you know which medications you’re taking and why. You must be able to provide this information accurately to your insurer when taking out Travel Insurance. A false statement or erroneous information can render your insurance contract null and void.

If you’re unsure about the functions of your medication, talk to your pharmacist. Ask for a comprehensive list of your medications and the medical conditions to which they relate.

No. Significant limitations and even exclusions of coverage apply if the insurer finds there has been abuse of alcohol, drugs, or medication. For example, if you have an accident while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you may not get any compensation.

Yes, your premium is fully refundable up to the effective date of your policy, provided it does not contain trip cancellation insurance. Policies including Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance cannot be refunded unless the request is made within 10 days of purchase.

Other conditions may apply. Please refer to the Refunds section of your insurance policy for full details.

Yes, you can get a refund for unused days if no claim is on file. Policies containing Trip Cancellation and Interruption insurance are not eligible for a refund of unused days. You must provide:

  • Proof of return (airline ticket, invoice, reservation email, etc.) in your province of residence. This must be signed by the insured person and indicate the place and date of your return.

To find out how to request a refund, see the form Early Return Refund Request
