If the trend continues, Quebec’s worst road will be...

Chemin du Contour-du-Lac-à-Beauce in La Tuque, Mauricie, has claimed the top spot in the provincial rankings for CAA-Quebec’s Worst Roads campaign. Residents and drivers who regularly use this road in Mauricie rallied during the 10th edition of the campaign to highlight the most deteriorated and neglected roads in their region.

Chemin Klock in Gatineau and Chemin Notch in Chelsea, both located in the Outaouais region, are ranked second and third respectively. People in these areas have the right to travel safely on well-maintained roads, and they participated in large numbers to send a message to the authorities. Despite numerous construction announcements and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent, several roads regularly make the list year after year. Citizen engagement is one of the solutions to identify problematic roads, no matter the issues they pose for travellers. Many cities whose roads are on the list would like to do more to maintain their road network, but have limited resources so they expect more help from the provincial government.

Everyone wants a better road network, but resources are limited. Our campaign is an annual reminder that choices need to be made, often between maintaining the current network and expanding it.

A moratorium on the construction of new roads?

In a recent survey1 conducted by CAA-Quebec among its members, 79% of respondents were in favour of temporarily suspending any road development project (adding roads and structures) until all existing infrastructure is in good condition. That level of response shows that for many road users, the condition and maintenance of the road network remain a concern.

Methodology

The tenth annual CAA-Quebec Worst Roads campaign ran from April 2 to April 27, 2025. Any road user (motorists, cyclists, pedestrians, truckers) could vote for the worst road in the province on the worstroads.com website. One vote per road per day per email address was allowed. A total of 3,027 votes were tallied to determine the final ranking for the Worst Roads of 2025.
