Dewinterizing your RV properly helps extend its lifespan and prevents bad surprises. After several months of inactivity, RV maintenance is essential. Here are 10 step-by-step checks to prepare your recreational vehicle for the summer season, whether it’s before your vacation, a road trip, or a camping trip.

1. Air out and clean the interior

Get rid of accumulated odours and dust from the winter months.

2. Inspect walls, ceiling, and windows for water leaks

  • Reseal joints with caulking if needed.
  • If you notice moisture inside the walls, consult a professional.

3. Check for signs of rodents

If you see droppings or urine stains, disinfect the interior while wearing gloves. Then seal all holes under the RV with urethane foam—except for the battery vent.

4. Test the water systems

  • Connect the freshwater system (hot and cold).

  • Gradually open the faucets (shower, bathroom, kitchen).

  • Check for leaks, especially from the water pump or tank.

  • Flush the toilet.

  • Let the water run a few minutes (until it runs clear) to remove antifreeze from the pipes.

5. Clean propane burners

Remove harmful particles with compressed air or a pressurized canister.

6. Check the propane tank

Make sure the propane cylinder is full. Verify the manufacturing date—it must be less than 10 years old. Connect it and check hose tightness with soapy water.

  • If all looks good, light a stove burner first.

  • Then test the fridge, furnace, and water heater.

Caution: If you smell sulphur, it could mean a propane leak. Be cautious.

7. Test safety detectors

Check smoke detectors, propane gas detectors, and carbon monoxide detectors. Verify expiry dates. Replace weak batteries and also test your fire extinguishers.

8. Connect your 12-volt battery

Hook up a fully charged battery. Make sure not to reverse the cables.

9. Inspect tires and lights

Check tire pressure, making sure they are properly inflated, as well as warning lights, headlights, and hazard lights. Test the jack (manual, electric, or hydraulic) and check oil levels if required.

10. Examine the RV exterior

Inspect the roof membrane, seals, antennas, skylights, air conditioner, outlets, and electrical connections. Also check assembly screws—they must be tightly sealed.

What to check on your RV before a trip

Have you chosen your destination, booked your campsites—or are you ready for a last-minute road trip? Before hitting the road, make sure to check:

  • Tire pressure

  • Headlights and lights: turn signals, rear lights, brake lights

  • Windshield wipers

  • Oil and fluid levels (washer fluid, engine, coolant, steering, brakes). Consult your owner’s manual if needed

  • Any loose cables or exhaust parts under the RV

  • A full fuel tank with the proper gas

  • Bike rack stability and bike attachment

Also make sure you have all mandatory documents and that they’re valid: driver’s licence, proof of recreational vehicle insurance, vehicle registration, accident report form.

RV insurance: What you need to know

In Quebec, your recreational vehicle must have civil liability coverage of at least $50,000. CAA-Quebec recommends $1 million and even $2 million if you leave the province, especially for the United States

Also insure the personal belongings inside your RV. And don’t forget travel insurance if you’re leaving the province

What to do if your RV breaks down

To avoid trouble, get Roadside Assistance designed for RVs. Towing or repairing a recreational vehicle after a breakdown often requires specialized tools and skills—and can be costly.

This type of coverage applies to both your RV and the towing vehicle, making it a smart investment for peace of mind.

CAA-Quebec members can add the RV Option to their CAA Plus or CAA Premier membership.
