Worst Roads 2021: One weekend left to vote!
The facts are in—Quebec’s roads are the worst in the country. As the experts have explained, our frequent freeze/thaw cycles are the main culprits of potholes. And with only a few days left to vote, Quebecers are on their way to sending a road in Matane to the top of the list of Worst Roads 2021.
Since April 20, thousands of votes have catapulted the Ferry Ramp in Matane to the number one spot, followed by Rimouski’s Chemin du 3e-Rang-Du-Bic and Rue Main in Hudson (1). With only a few days left to vote before the May 17 deadline, will we see a last-minute push for a change? Make your vote count by going on CAAworstroads.com.
“The list of Worst roads is a good way for residents to tell decision makers about the current state of our roads and possible dangerous sections across the province,” said Sophie Gagnon, Vice President, Communications and Public Affairs, at CAA-Quebec. “Let’s hope the people’s voice will contribute to improving the quality of life of all road users through better and safer road infrastructure.”
A campaign that works
The “champion” in 2019 was Boulevard Gouin Est in Montreal. Corinne Tastayre, affectionately known as “Ms. Gouin” in some media outlets, led a citizen campaign to raise awareness of the need for new improvements to this stretch of road.
As a result, Montreal launched “Projet Poussette” which resulted in nearly eight kilometres of new pavement, a new pedestrian corridor, a two-way bicycle path, and a new traffic lane for the citizens of the Rivière-des-Prairies–Pointe-aux-Trembles borough. Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante was present to celebrate the completion of this project in August 2020.
For Ms. Tastayre, “the repairs to Boulevard Gouin Est was a big win for our neighbourhood and for the Worst Roads campaign. The road has been in the top 10 for so many years that our elected officials had no choice but to fix it!”
One last weekend to make your voice heard
All road users who wish to make their voices heard have until May 17 to register their vote on CAAWorstRoads.com. Now’s the time to reach out to your network and get as many people as possible to vote on the platform.
Why vote? To advocate for all road users who want a safe and efficient network by lobbying decision makers about the importance of proper road maintenance.
Remember that CAA-Quebec will send a report to the authorities responsible for the roads in our top 10. We’ll follow up a few months later to inform the public and see what’s been done to improve these pitiful roads.
