It’s April, potholes are hitting the streets again!

Published on April 12, 2023

It sure can be frustrating when the sweet nectar of maple syrup is replaced by the bitter taste of a hefty bill following damage to your car. Even more so when you hit a pothole on your way to the sugar shack! Are you tired of this recurring situation every spring? In its Worst Roads campaign, CAA-Quebec calls on all road users to mobilize and denounce the poor state of the province’s roads.

Voting is open right now on the caaworstroads.com platform. For the eighth year, CAA-Quebec is encouraging motorists, cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians, in short all road users to identify the worst roads in the province. Uneven pavement, faded striping, unsafe infrastructure, cracks … many factors can contribute to poor pavement conditions. However one thing is certain, everyone can benefit from a safe road in good shape.

A little vote goes a long way!

Over the course of eight years of spring campaigning, more than 70,000 votes have been cast, dozens of roads have been crowned as the Worst Roads, and a number of them have been repaired following the organization’s interventions at the various levels of government. It is clear that this campaign is bearing fruit and that it provides a golden opportunity for all road users to reassert the importance of maintaining the quality of the road network they navigate on a daily basis.

“With just a few clicks, the public has the opportunity to play an active role in sending a clear message to decision makers. Taking no more than a minute of one’s time has the power to attract millions in investment to the routes taken by road users every day.”

- Sophie Gagnon, Vice President, Public Affairs and Road Safety

The Worst Roads are hurting the state!

The most recent provincial budget highlighted that only 56% of the road network is considered to be in good condition. Moreover, according to data published by the government, an immediate total investment of more than $20 billion would be required to restore the network.

Therefore, the planned investment of $31.5 billion in the road network over the next 10 years is clearly insufficient to fully rehabilitate the entire road infrastructure. Besides, the vast majority of this investment is only planned for the maintenance of its current state, while the deficit is growing every year. This reality only reinforces the relevance of the Worst Roads campaign.
