Gasoline in the Capitale-Nationale region: Régie de l’énergie confirms CAA-Quebec’s observations

Published on October 25, 2023

CAA-Quebec acknowledges the notice on price discrepancies and marketing margins published by the Régie de l’énergie. Unfortunately for motorists, its findings confirm what has been known for a long time: the average prices at the pump are among the three highest in the province, and the margins charged by gas stations in the Capitale-Nationale region are also very high. Motorists have every right to expect answers. It is worth recalling that CAA-Quebec had called on the Minister of the Economy, Innovation and Energy to obtain this opinion from the Régie in a letter sent last August 18.

Minister Pierre Fitzgibbon’s intent to meet with the five major gasoline retailers in the Capitale-Nationale region is a step in the right direction, but the issue of current margins remains excessively high. As late as Wednesday, October 25, the retail margin for the Greater Québec City area was nearly 18 cents per litre, which is twice the margin charged in Montréal.

“There have been inconsistencies at the pumps in the city of Québec, and some explanations are in order. Consumers expect to obtain their gasoline at a fair price, and especially in a context of inflation like that which we are currently experiencing. We’re proud to help consumers make sense of it all with our Gasoline Watch.”

- Sophie Gagnon, Vice-President, Public Affairs and Social Responsibility

CAA-Quebec will be taking the time necessary to analyze the work done by the Régie de l’énergie. The notice is available on the Régie’s website (available in French only).

CAA-Quebec is committed to this issue!

As a long-standing advocate of motorists’ interests and a keen observer of market fluctuations, CAA-Quebec reiterates its interest and openness to collaborating with the Régie de l’énergie and the Ministère de l’Économie, de l’Innovation et de l’Énergie. This situation has dragged on in the Capitale-Nationale region for more than two years, and has been detrimental to the citizens of the Greater Québec area.

A user-friendly tool: Gasoline Watch

In an effort to help consumers, CAA-Quebec has for many years produced a straightforward, accessible tool for the general public to help them decide whether or not to fill up their fuel tank, in addition to providing information on the components of gasoline pricing and the various factors that influence it.

From Monday to Friday, CAA-Quebec reports the average pump price in each of Quebec’s 17 administrative regions, along with a realistic price.

The Gasoline Watch tool is available on caaquebec.com.
