Electric Vehicles Getting Family-friendly
Come see–and, best of all, try–them thanks to the Auto Show and CAA-Quebec !
Electric vehicles (EV) are no longer confined to the luxury segment. The latest models, among them the eagerly awaited Hyundai Kona Electric, with its impressive 400 km range, are proof that EVs are increasingly well-suited to ordinary families’ everyday lives—and their budgets. To decide for themselves, though, consumers need to see, try and compare them. This month, they can do just that, thanks to CAA-Quebec’s program of free test drives at the Montreal International Auto Show.
Since the program was introduced in 2013, some 20,000 people have taken test drives. In 2019, no fewer than 12 different EV and plug-in hybrid electrics (PHEVs) will be available to Auto Show visitors. These test drives are made possible thanks to the financial support of Transition énergétique Québec and the support of Quebec charging station manufacturer FLO.
“We have a record number of EVs to try out this year, reflecting the growing diversification within the market,” notes CAA-Quebec automotive expert Jesse Caron, who will be giving talks at the Show. “A CAA-Quebec team will also be on hand to answer visitors’ questions. We’ll be informing members of the public on multiple details that make all the difference in the decision to buy an EV. Yes, you can make it from Montreal to Quebec City in an electric. No, driving an EV isn’t boring! And yes, an electric can be cheaper to drive than an equivalent gas-powered model,” he adds.
Vehicles available for test drives
- The Hyundai Kona Electric is a guaranteed head-turner! Its gas-powered twin has already made an impression with its striking design. The compact SUV is also attracting attention for its advertised range of just over 400 km, at a price point under $50,000 (not counting the government rebate) which makes it a very competitive entry in the market.

- Also from Hyundai, the IONIQ Electric will be back at the Show this year. CAA-Quebec has been using an adapted version of this vehicle for its mobile charging pilot project, which allows members who own an EV to drive with peace of mind, with no fear of running out of “juice”.
- For those eager for something roomier, Hyundai’s Korean cousin Kia has introduced the Niro PHEV, a plug-in hybrid that bridges the hatchback and family SUV segments. With a full-charge range of 42 km, it’s sure to attract plenty of urban families.

- Over at Mitsubishi, the Outlander PHEV has delivered on its promises. It remains extremely popular, as it’s the only true plug-in SUV among non-luxury models.
- The Nissan LEAF is also back. One of the most popular compact EVs, it boasts a driving distance of 242 km—enough to get you through practically a full week’s commuting without needing to plug in.
- Chevrolet is still in the mix with its legendary Volt PHEV and Bolt EV, two very popular vehicles that offer sure-fire value for money. The Volt features one of the top fuel-economy ratings among PHEVs.
- The Honda Clarity PHEV will also be available for test drives. This impressive car can travel up to 77 km without burning a drop of gas.
- Die-hard Volkswagen disciples—and everyone else—can try out the e-Golf, the electric version of the famous German compact, which has a range of 201 km.
- The BMW 530e xDrive and i3, along with the new Volvo XC60 T8, also promise to win over their share of visitors.
Electric vehicle test drives are presented by CAA-Quebec at the Montreal International Auto Show:
- January 18 to 26 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and January 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the Palais des congrès de Montréal
- A total of 18 vehicles (12 different models) available
- 3.1-km circuit blending highway and city driving, with a ride-along expert available to answer questions about the vehicle
