CAA-Quebec welcomes the provincial government’s road safety action plan

Published on August 22, 2023

To improve our road safety record throughout Quebec, we need to take all road users into account. Accordingly, this morning’s government announcement should help to redress a particularly gloomy record, with a 10-year peak in fatalities and worrying safety issues for vulnerable road users. Let’s underline the common will of various interest groups toward this national strategy, such groups acting on behalf of the vast majority of people who use our roads on a daily basis.

Earlier in 2023, as the number of fatalities among vulnerable road users soared within a very short space of time, CAA-Quebec joined some ten other organizations in calling for the immediate implementation of a road safety strategy, as it had been promised five years earlier. Today, the government’s announcement indicates its firm intention to move forward with concrete actions for a better road safety record.

“We welcome the government’s latest action in the field of road safety, and reiterate the commitment of CAA-Quebec and its Foundation to contributing actively to them. Hopefully, the adoption of such measures will usher in a change of culture aimed at making daily travel safer for all road users.”

- Sophie Gagnon, Vice President, Public Affairs and Social Responsibility

The idea behind bringing together the various key players in road safety, who represent all road users, is a very positive one to which CAA-Quebec intends to actively contribute, notably through the involvement of its experts on committees or by sharing critical information with all its members.

There are several aspects to improving road safety, and the announced plan is a step in that direction. Whether they involve the redevelopment of road infrastructures or the evolution of our laws and regulations, including better and more effective enforcement of the latter, these new measures must be jointly implemented if real improvements are to be achieved. In fact, this is what our organization recently outlined in an article published in the Association québécoise des transports (AQTr) magazine, as well as in the spring editorial of the CAA-Quebec Magazine. The concerns of the various stakeholders have finally been heard by the government in office, and it is with great enthusiasm that CAA-Quebec will closely monitor the implementation of the promised actions.

CAA-Quebec: an active player in road safety

Well aware that mobility is experienced daily and in different ways, CAA-Quebec and its Foundation cooperate with numerous groups and organizations to promote the importance of safe travel. Together, they raise awareness and provide tools for all road users, in addition to working with seniors and youth, and will continue to do so to reinforce the message issued by the government.
