Parents, you get to sit back and stay at the wheel while patrollers help your children into school! They’ll open the door and usher your children to the school yard. You just need to say goodbye and wish your kids a great day! A VIP exclusive? Nope! It’s the CAA‑Quebec Foundation school drop-off patrol, a safe way to bring order to the morning hustle and bustle of getting kids to school.

What’s the school drop-off patrol?

The drop-off patrol is there to bring order to the rush of vehicles and passengers converging on school in the morning. Patrollers establish a drop-off zone in the parking lot or a nearby street using signs, cones, bollards, or other equipment. First, an adult patroller admits a group of vehicles into the designated drop-off zone. Once the vehicles are parked, the young CAA-Quebec patrollers spring into action, opening car doors and helping children out safely. The cars leave, the students are ushered either into school or the schoolyard, and the process repeats.

“The CAA-Quebec school drop-off patrol can be a great solution for schools with a lot of traffic or road sharing issues before the morning bell when everyone’s in a hurry.”

- Marco Harrison, Foundation Director, CAA-Quebec Foundation

Celebrating 90 years

The CAA-Quebec Foundation is also celebrating the 90th anniversary of the safety patrol and especially the fact that in that time over 500,000 primary school children have signed up to become road safety ambassadors and develop their sense of responsibility and commitment. “With the school drop-off patrol pilot project, the CAA-Quebec Foundation safety patrol is still just as relevant today and continues to have a real impact on the safety of our children,” said Harrison, who wanted to thank Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec for its funding and dedication to the safety patrol. With the help of various schools and partners, over 400 schools across the province now have patrols served by more than 8,000 proud and dedicated young patrollers.

On the road to Vision Zero with the City of Montreal

This type of project is squarely in line with the City of Montreal’s bold Vision Zero plan aimed at zero road fatalities. “With the Vision Zero approach, cooperation between all partners is key,” said Eric Alan Caldwell, City of Montreal executive committee member responsible for urban planning and mobility. “The CAA-Quebec Foundation has shown remarkable dedication and drive on this. I’m happy to see this initiative that promotes safe traffic in and around schools. It takes real innovation to roll out solutions that can be adapted to different environments. I’m convinced it will help raise awareness about the importance of being cautious near schools.”
