A full 30% of Quebec drivers have had to pay for vehicle repairs after driving over a pothole in the last five years alone. In Canada, potholes cost $1.4 billion a year in vehicle damage.1
“In the last two winters, we’ve seen a trend: starting in February, we get a fair volume of cars in for rim repairs and burst tires,” says Stéphane Poirier, head of Pneus Touchette’s retail network.
A tough Winter
“We’ve seen it across our network, in every corner of Quebec: it was a rough winter and our mechanics were very busy as a result,” says Jacques Maheux, director of CAA-Quebec’s Approved Auto Repair Services network. “When the roads are bad, it’s definitely hard on your vehicle. If it’s just a tire, it’s easy enough to fix. But if that pothole messes with your rocker panel or suspension, it can easily cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars to repair.”
The best way to navigate a pothole
What’s the best way to navigate a pothole? Hold the steering wheel firmly, avoid any sudden movements, and brake on the approach, not on impact.
“Drivers seeking compensation for potholerelated damage have options, but it’s not a simple process. You have to submit evidence. Before going down that road, it’s best to talk to your insurer. It’s a much easier way to obtain compensation, provided you’re insured for damage to your vehicle,” explains Suzanne Michaud, Vice President, Insurance, with CAA-Quebec.
