Winter tires: “that’s not what I’m looking for!”

Published on September 3, 2021

To avoid having to utter these words when visiting your tire dealer, don’t wait any longer: book your winter tires now.

That’s what five Quebec tire dealers and distributors we contacted at the end of August 2021 unanimously advised us to do. And while no one has winter on their mind just yet, a few calls now could save you the aggravation of dealing with tires that are ill suited to your vehicle or your driving style.

To be clear, tire professionals are not worried about a widespread shortage for the upcoming winter tire season. Dealers will have enough tires in their warehouses to meet demand before the December 1 deadline. However, some brands may run out of stock faster than others, especially for popular sizes or, conversely, for the rarer ones.

Short supply

The main complicating factor this year is the tire supply from Asia. There is a shortage of containers to move the countless consumer products manufactured in Asia, especially those from China. Tires are no exception. Orders are coming in weeks late and costing more to ship than usual. This applies not only to entry-level Chinese products, but also to major brand tires made in Asian factories.

The pandemic does not help matters because it is still wreaking havoc on the manufacturing sector in a number of emerging countries. Some facilities are running at a slower pace, which is exacerbating supply delays.

Rising prices

Unsurprisingly, this difficult situation will drive up the price of some winter tire lines. The distributors and merchants we contacted all warn that the cost of Asian brands will rise by 10, 15, even 20% for the 2021–2022 season. According to a major dealer in the Quebec City area, the increase would even affect European companies such as Nokian and Michelin, but more like by 4 to 8%.

We know that Chinese brands are usually known for their affordable price, but the current situation could reduce that advantage. Ask your dealer to compare their costs with those of mid-range tires from reputable manufacturers. The results may surprise you!

Merchants are ready

No matter whether you deal with a tire specialist, a trusted tire shop, a dealer or a CAA-Quebec approved auto repair service, they are all ready to take your winter tire orders. Call them now to discuss a solution for your vehicle and driving habits. Take advantage of this opportunity to schedule an installation appointment right away for some time in October or November, depending on the most realistic date for winter tire installation for your area.
