Slow down and move over! It’s the law.
The Move Over Law has been in effect in Quebec since 2012, and similar laws exist almost everywhere in North America. The purpose is simple: to protect people working on the side of the road, such as tow truck operators, firefighters, ambulance personnel, police officers, and road workers.
As the summer season approaches, we want to remind motorists what to do when a vehicle is parked on the side of the road with its lights flashing. You need to slow down to a reasonable, safe speed and change lanes away from the vehicle if you can do so safely.
Better safe than sorry: If there’s a vehicle on the shoulder, slow down and move over every time, even if there’s no emergency or lights flashing.
