CAA-Quebec statement: Disappointment for motorists in the Montréal

Published on April 28, 2023

CAA-Quebec has been advocating against municipal taxing power on vehicle registration since 2010. As a result, we are disappointed with the application of this tax to passenger vehicles registered in the entire territory of the Montréal Metropolitan Community (MMC) starting January 1, 2024. And as if that wasn’t enough, it will rise at the same time from $45 to $59.

This expenditure comes on top of steep property tax increases, a 3% public transit fare increase and a high cost of living that is already squeezing many.

This decision, which CAA-Quebec considers to be punitive for all motorists, fails to address the issue. It negates the efforts of all those who have begun a transition to active mobility or even use public transit daily. As an organization, we support the idea of a combination of mobility that includes the rational use of the automobile, public transit and active transportation (walking and cycling), provided that the infrastructure allows these choices for all users.

Motorists in the MMC are already being charged a high price for their mobility, especially since many of them still do not have viable alternatives or adequate services to get around on a daily basis. This is why CAA-Quebec, which represents 1.34 million members in Quebec, cannot endorse this new measure, which it deems unfair.
