Water damage and home insurance: Covered or not?

In Quebec, water damage is the leading cause of home insurance claims. Discover which types of damage are covered by basic coverage and which require additional protection. Also learn what precautions to take to prevent loss or damage caused by water.
Homeowner or renter?
Coverage varies depending on your situation. Even if you’re a renter, certain types of damage may affect you.
An example? You live on the ground floor and backed-up water reaches a neighbouring unit. You could be held liable and have to file a claim under your personal liability insurance. That’s why it’s important to fully understand what your home insurance coverage includes, and when to contact your insurer or insurance agent.
Damage covered by a basic policy
Some incidents related to plumbing fixtures are generally covered by a standard home insurance policy. Still, always verify—contracts vary from one insurer to another.
Damage caused by plumbing fixtures
Your water heater leaks and damages the floating floor in your basement:
- Covered under the basic policy

“Some protections are included in your home insurance, others must be added. Our tips to help you avoid unpleasant surprises and protect your home.”
Suzanne MichaudVice President, Insurance, CAA-Quebec
The water supply line to your ice maker leaks and water damages a wall and the bottom of your cabinets:
- Covered under the basic policy
In these situations, your insurance covers the cost of repairing the water damage—but not the appliance itself.
Damage requiring additional coverage
These protections must have been added to your policy at the time of purchase. Even so-called all-risk policies don’t automatically include this type of coverage.
Damage caused by a burst drinking water line
The interior water line in your home breaks, and water floods your basement:
- Covered if you have the “Water Service Line Break” endorsement
Damage caused by water infiltration
In spring, melting snow water enters your basement through windows or window wells:
Covered if you have the “Water Damage – Ground Water and Sewer” endorsement
Water enters through your roof during a heavy fall rainstorm:
- Covered if you have the “Water Damage – Above-Ground Water” endorsement
Damage caused by sewer backup
Your neighbourhood experiences heavy rainfall and the sewers back up:
- Covered if you have the “Water Damage – Ground Water and Sewer” endorsement
Damage related to river overflow
River levels rise due to an ice jam. Water reaches your property and then enters your home:
Covered if you added flood protection and overflow protection. Not offered by all insurers. Eligibility conditions may apply.
In certain flood situations, Quebec’s Ministry of Public Security disaster assistance program may also provide financial support.
What your insurance doesn’t always tell you
Endorsements or additional protections for water damage come with specific coverage limits. For example: $10,000 to cover all costs related to water damage. Pay close attention to this amount—it differs from your overall insurance amount. And don’t forget: when filing a claim, the deductible listed in your policy applies.
It may be helpful to reassess your coverage if your home is located in a high-risk area.
Have you experienced water damage? Professional cleanup is essential. Review the different steps and required certifications.
Still unsure? Consult your insurer or broker. They can answer your questions and adjust your coverage if needed. It all comes down to risk—and especially your risk tolerance.
Preventive tips to reduce the risk of water damage
- Install a backwater valve inside your home to prevent sewer backup.
- Clean gutters regularly to prevent water from accumulating near the foundation.
- Watch for signs of infiltration (cracks, humidity) and seal them quickly.
- Shut off the main water supply when travelling to avoid prolonged leaks, or drain the pipes.
- Add water leak detectors. Some devices automatically shut off the water when a leak is detected, helping prevent major damage.
Simple actions that reduce the risk of property damage and long-term impacts.
