How to prepare your car for summer

Knowing how to properly prepare your car before hitting the road for summer vacations is essential. A routine vehicle inspection helps prevent mechanical failures and roadside breakdowns caused by wear and tear or changing weather conditions. Checking fluid levels, tire condition, air pressure, air conditioners, battery health, and packing a well-equipped emergency kit are all key steps. Here are 10 tips to get your car ready for summer, whether you drive a gas-powered car or an electric vehicle (EV).
1. Test the air conditioning system
Make sure the air flows properly and that the car AC system cools effectively. In warm weather (20°C or higher), cold air should come out of the vents in under two minutes. Testing on a cooler day may give inaccurate results.
2. Inspect the tires
Check tire wear and adjust to the recommended tire pressure provided on the sticker inside the driver’s door frame (not on the tire itself). Don’t forget to check the spare tire as well. Proper tire maintenance helps with safety and fuel efficiency.
3. Check fluid levels
Engine oil: Check your oil level before a road trip and ideally every two visits to the gas station. Park on a flat surface, wait 10 minutes, and then take the reading.
Brake fluid, power steering fluid, and coolant: Inspect and top up if needed.
Windshield washer fluid: Use a formula designed for summer.
These checks apply to both cars with internal combustion engines (ICE) and electric vehicles (EVs).
4. Visually inspect the car battery
Use a voltmeter to test your car battery.
Clean the battery terminals and connectors with a water and baking soda mixture (wear gloves and safety glasses).
This can also be done by your mechanic or through CAA-Quebec Battery Service.
Good to know: Summer heat can accelerate car battery wear up to three times faster than in winter. Park in the shade whenever possible.
5. Make sure the brakes are in good condition
Certain signs may indicate that your brakes need service or replacement: vibrations when braking, a soft brake pedal, squealing or grinding noises, or rust on the discs.
If your car pulls to one side or dips forward when braking, that’s another warning sign. When in doubt, have the braking system inspected by a professional.
6. Replace your windshield wipers if necessary
Proper wiper blades are essential. Replace them every six months or before a long road trip. Flat, flexible models often offer better performance.
7. Clean and protect your vehicle
Clean your car inside and out. Find everything you need for your car’s aesthetics at the CAA-Quebec Boutique.
Apply a good wax. This makes future washes easier and protects the paint against dirt and insects.
For a longer-lasting result, ask your mechanic or an auto detailing centre for professional polishing.
8. Prepare an emergency kit
9. Check the headlights and signal lights
Make sure your headlights, brake lights, and turn signals all work properly by activating the brakes and indicators. Check for cleanliness and functionality. You can clean and polish headlights yourself with products available at auto parts stores or big-box retailers.
10. Have your car inspected by a professional
Before hitting the road for summer vacation, take your car to a CAA-Quebec Authorized Vehicle Inspection Centre. An inspection covers brakes, suspension, electronics, the battery, and more. If adjustments are needed, go to an Approved Auto Repair Service.
