Even the best racers need roadside assistance: CAA-Quebec has signed a three-year deal as official towing partner of the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada. The agreement gives CAA-Quebec’s roadside assistance team a chance to show off their expertise. And since racing takes commitment, CAA-Quebec also wants to spread the word about what the world’s top racing teams are doing to achieve carbon neutrality at Formula 1 events.

As an affiliate of Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, Formula 1’s governing body, CAA-Quebec will have an opportunity to showcase the benefits the organization provides and the challenges it faces in pursuing the energy transition. The June Grand Prix event marked the start of this new contract.  CAA-Quebec members and the general public will see that the investments automakers pour into racing do a lot more than just keep cars on the track.

Formula 1: An automotive lab for cleaner mobility

Many people don’t realize that fierce competition between racing teams drives development of advanced technologies that wind up in mass-market vehicles. Hybrid motors and anti-lock brakes are just two such technologies fine-tuned over the years. F1s have had hybrid engines for more than a decade now. In fact, these supercars use as little as 100 litres of fuel over three days of racing.

Even the best drivers need CAA-Quebec roadside assistance

CAA-Quebec was on hand for the June Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada in Montreal. A total of 11 patrollers and 22 tow trucks were strategically positioned on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit during the event to demonstrate CAA-Quebec’s roadside assistance capabilities, equipment, and training during the weekend’s high-calibre events (Ferrari, F1600, and F1), and in all kinds of weather.  In total, the team responded to some 30 requests for assistance.

Sharing news about the Grand Prix’s energy transition

The contributions made by F1 racing are many. The technical innovations introduced through F1 have helped make vehicles more durable, safer, and more fuel efficient.

In addition to automobile mechanics, F1 is partnering with Fédération Internationale de l’automobile (FIA) to develop a sustainable fuel that can eventually be used in commercial cars. The new fuel is a key part of the organization’s strategy for achieving carbon neutrality by 2030. It will have a major impact on global greenhouse gas emissions, as it can be used in any existing vehicle.

And let’s not forget the army of volunteers who work behind the scenes to reduce the environmental impacts of F1 racing and keep the well-oiled F1 machine running smoothly, to the delight of the public.

These are all things that CAA-Quebec will highlight as part of its new partnership as it shares and supports the long process implemented by F1 on the road to the ecological transition.
