Borrowing someone else's car or lending someone your car - know the consequences
Borrowing a Car
Fall is just around the corner so it’s time to start storing away all your summer items. You need to transport your lawn mower back home from your chalet so you borrow your neighbour’s minivan without a second thought. The question is: Are you covered on your car insurance policy in case of an accident?
Damages caused to others with a borrowed vehicle In most cases, you are covered for damages you may cause to others with a borrowed vehicle (unless stated otherwise on your insurance policy).
- The damages are covered by the insurer of the vehicle owner first, therefore your neighbour’s insurer.
- However, if the insured amount is not sufficient to cover all the damages, then the difference will be covered by your insurer.
Damages to the borrowed vehicle You are not automatically covered for damages caused to a borrowed vehicle unless you have the endorsement Q.E.F 27 Civil Liability Resulting for Damage to Non-Owned Automobiles included on your car insurance policy. Imagine this, you are driving a borrowed vehicle that is not insured for collision and you’ve just had an accident for which you are responsible for. With the endorsement Q.E.F 27 you won’t have to pay the damages from your own pocket you’ll only have to pay out the amount of your deductible.
Lending Your Car
Damages caused to your vehicle If you lend you car to a friend, that friend will be covered by your car insurance policy, depending on your coverage. If the insured amount is not sufficient to cover all the damages, then the difference will be covered by your friend’s car insurance policy.
It is important to note that if you or your friend makes a claim as a result of a responsible accident, and neither of you are covered for collision, then no insurer will pay for the damages caused to your vehicle.
Get peace of mind If you lend your car to the same person on a regular basis or if you lend your car to someone who intends on using your vehicle outside of Quebec, you should advise your insurer. They may need to be added to your policy, especially if they are less than 25 years of age.
Advice from belairdirect and Intact Insurance Not all insurers offer the same protection. |
